For this book, I contributed an essay entitled "The Tangled Web We Weave." The general thrust of the essay concerns the way that the move away from man-made web shooters to organic shooters is part of the general denigration of the role of science in contemporary American culture. A highlight of the essay for me was that I was able to include a quote from Dr. Paula T. Hammond of MIT’s Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, whose team are the world's top researchers in the area of synthesized spider silk. Coincidentally, Dr. Hammond shares a last name with Nicholas Hammond, who portrayed the webslinger on the 1977 television show, The Amazing Spider-Man. | |
